An important aspect to Fallen Limb Designs is that all of our lumber is locally and sustainably sourced by partnering with local tree cutters harvesting overgrowth, storm damaged/fallen trees, and discarded pallets. This makes all of the designs truly “one-of-a-kind” that can never be duplicated or mass-produced. It's for that reason we post every item available and not a general description with an " * " noting that your product may look different. The only exception to this is our flags, which we allow you to customize making it your very own.
All of our cutting boards and charcuterie boards start by being rough cut straight from the log.
The wooden disks and bark are first treated with all-natural products to ensure no pests, moss, or molds are present. They are then slowly dried for a minimum of six weeks. This will usually cause small checks and cracks that will later be filled with resin. If minimal checks and cracks are desired, the wooden disks are immediately treated with several coats of Pentacryl wood stabilizer and then allowed to dry.
Once milled flat, and voids filled, each cutting board or charcuterie board is hand sanded from 40 grit sand paper up to 400 grit sand paper. All resin is then hand sanded up to 12,000 grit and polished.
All wooden surfaces are then treated with a minimum of two coats of cutting board oil and two coats of our own brand wood wax. Cutting boards will also receive one final coat of oil and wax prior to shipment.
Personally, I love the look of bark on the boards. Any bark that falls off during the milling, sanding, and fabrication process is left off - bark that survives is left on. If, however you would like all of the bark removed, simply let me know and we'll make that happen. It's always easier to remove the bark at the end than it is to put it back!
Please note that remaining bark may still fall off due to use and washing. If that happens, simply treat the area with a coating of cutting board oil or wax or you can reattach using a food safe wood glue like Titebond III.
Our cutting boards are designed to be used for day-to-day food preparation. They normally contain more hard wood, and little resin. The resin that is used for cutting boards is solely to fill gaps in the wood to prevent additional splitting, to add a touch of color, and to create a solid surface.
Charcuterie boards will usually contain more resin than cutting boards, and are used for display and serving. The reason for this is that although resin is solid and resilient, resin will scratch when cut on.
Many of our cutting boards can be used as charcuterie boards, cake stands, or center pieces. Charcuterie boards can be cut on as well, however expect that you will get scratching.
We do not recommend putting your cutting board or charcuterie board in the dish washer. Simply clean with warm soapy water and towel dry. Re-apply a good cutting board oil or mineral oil regularly to ensure a good seal and the wood remains healthy. DO NOTuse vegetable-based oils -- they can go rancid.
You can also sanitize your board with a light bleach solution. Use 1 tsp. of bleach for every 1 quart of water. Pour the mixture over the board, or spray with a spray bottle and then rinse with clean water.
If your cutting board or charcuterie board develops scratches (which will happen), you can sand out any deep scratches with steel wool, orbital sander, or a piece of sand paper. Be sure to re-apply oil or wax after sanding.
All of our boards are made from natural wood, and wood will absorb moisture. Sometimes when this happens the moisture content in the wood changes unevenly and can cause warping or cupping. Not to worry this is easily fixed.
To fix the cupping lightly dampen the inside face of the board. Place the board cupped side down on a piece of plastic wrap overnight. When you wake up the next morning the cupping should be gone. Now follow-up with a healthy coating of cutting board oil or wax.
As all of our wood disk cutting boards are urban sourced it can be difficult to custom build. However, if there is a specific color or pattern you are looking for, drop us a line and we'd love to chat about it.
On most of our products you have the option to customize with laser engraving. Simply provide us with the image and your desired location and we will send you a proof to confirm.
Our mission is to provide you with uncompromised workmanship, quality, and value. We pride ourselves in creating one-of-a-kind products that should last a long time. With that said, please reach out to us if you have any issues with any product and we will do our best to make it right for both parties.
I take great pride in my work, and sometimes items are not up to my exacting standards. With that said, I also try to be as sustainable (heck even our packaging and shipping supplies are re-used) as possible and can't bear to throw away a project due to a small flaw. Hence the Discount Section. These items will contain small flaws which I will highlight in the description or photos, but do not impact the use of the product.
You can take a look right here. I've added a page to highlight some of the products I use, expecially if I find them to be usefull and a good value. I will definitly continue to update as I experiment with new products and items.
